4 Common Mistakes Made When Facing Challenging Times

How do you deal with challenging times? Do you have tools to help yourself navigate well a difficult season.

Our most powerful instinct as humans is to “survive”. When this is turned on all the time we end up living in a world of suspicion and negativity, taking in consciously and unconsciously spoonful’s of fear coming to us via the information we hear and gather from social media and the news.

Hopelessness, fear, confusion, insecurities, anxiety, overwhelming feelings and/or loneliness, addictions - these are all needs that want to be met. How we interact with our needs really decides how healthy we are and what we do to meet these needs. Ask yourself what you turn to. The news? If so, you’ll be let down due to being stuck in survival mode.

Question what your needs are and what you are carrying. How much is too much for you? Are you carrying work stuff when you are at home? Are you carrying home responsibilities whilst at work? Don’t keep adding stuff and justifying it or putting shame on yourself for not coping or being unaware of why this is all happening or just avoiding it all and soldiering on. Weight is easy to pile on but if you’re not careful you’ll end up with loads of disempowering emotions.

Weight that’s been carried a long time can easily just become part of you; it’s familiar and so accepted as okay but this does not mean it’s okay or that it’s not affecting you. The real reason you are carrying too much weight is not because you are super responsible or tough but because of your broken relationship to your “needs and wants.”

4 Common Mistakes when people are trying to solve problems

  1. Using friends instead of great guides. Friends can give you hope and encourage you, but if they are not victorious in that area, or an expert in that area or professional or able to hand you the breakthrough they had in that area, then you may feel like you have solved the problem, when in fact  you have not got rid of it, but instead have only put it down for a while and it may very well come back later.

  2. Instant gratification over long term reward.

  3. Not understanding or being a good steward with where you are at right now and unaware of what you are carrying. You cannot solve anything you don’t take responsibility for.

  4.  Procrastination

The best motivator as you navigate well a challenging season is to carry HOPE within you and begin looking for solutions.
