Overwhelm & anxiety

OVERWHELM: when something is over you. You feel pushed down, defeated by your circumstances.

We live in a world where right now there is much pain and change. We have overwhelming internet content and hear rafts of information. We must become good at discerning amidst the clutter, to stay informed is good to adjust to navigating what we hear as we cannot just turn it off so easily as its all around us. 

We all know someone affected in some way right now, and if it is not today it may be tomorrow. This comes on top of the normal busyness of life today, with deadlines, family issues and so on. 

Moments of overwhelm panic are normal.  A natural reaction to life’s curveballs - especially now!

Tools for managing overwhelm and anxiety

Here are some tools to navigate these times, to calm down and help see situations objectively:

1.  Do a deep-breathing exercise

2.  Do low-impact exercise

3.  Engage in mentally soothing activity:

  • Meditate on gratitude
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Breathe easy with an aromatherapy diffuser
  • Write down all your concerns—getting them out of your mind and onto paper is soothing in itself!

4. Reframe thoughts

Feeling defeated? Find a thought that will encourage you to feel the opposite emotion of capability.

Reframe the negative feeling with an optimistic.  For example “I have achieved things in the past and am working on achieving this very hard thing right now.’”
